Leadership

Korean Olympics
During the summer of 2010, I became a player and representative of the Dallas Korean Olympic basketball team. I represented the Dallas Korean Community in a nationwide basketball tournament against other national Korean basketball teams. As a representative I went out into the Dallas Korean community and spoke on behalf of the team to help promote the tournament and receive sponsorships. I also promoted the Korean American youth to be active in the community and emphasized the importance of healthy lifestyle. Becoming a part of the Korean Olympics as opened up many doors for me and has allowed me to meet new people some of them becoming my closest friends. I become a stronger team player and leader, learning that in order for the team to succeed everyone must be performing at their best and not just one player. I also learned how to handle players who do not see eye to eye with the rest of the team. During the summer of 2011 we had a new player join us who did not have the best interest for the whole team but only for himself. This disrupted our team chemistry we had built and prevented us from playing at our best. As a veteran I spoke with the player in private and explained how hard we had worked to build the team chemistry. I told the player that our team would only become better if he played for our team and not only play for himself. We had a dramatically turn around and in the summer of 2012 we were the first Dallas team to reach the championship game.

Filipino Students' Association (FSA)
I have become active in a few student organizations at The University of Texas at Austin. The Filipino Students' Association is an student organization in where I have become the basketball captain. As the captain I am responsible for organizing practices, game schedules, and the team roster for two men's and one co-ed team. During the practices I come up with the drills and make sure to get everyone's full effort. I make sure to stay in contact and convey all the information with all team players by posting on Facebook, text messaging, and calling. Being captain for the basketball teams has taught me that being effective in communication information with your team members is very important. It is also important to give advice, give encouragement and always stay positive with the team.
